Gentlemen, the ground staff have been in touch and they’ve asked us what we want from the greens.

It was as an easy answer……….’faster than The Belfry and make the holes 4mm smaller, THIS IS THE CALCO fellas!’

‘Oh and by the way we want a gentle easterly breeze, no rain, tidy bar staff for after and make sure we all get buggies!’…….They replied …’Of course SAS of course’.

Pin positions are being specially prepared for some of Europe’s leading golfers, and the bunkers readied for some of Europe’s leading shite ! J
The practice sessions are in full swing, golden gooses and  mooses are being readily talked about.
Bells bookies will soon be open and there is the draw and a loosener on August 9th which is filling up nicely.
The hotel requested on a previous visit that we don’t sing in the lobby..hmmm Fleming is with us this year and after 12 pints there isn’t much going to stop the big man. So all the best to them on that one!
The big debate is about COPLEY, will he play and give us the chance of a second annual ginger moose? Or will he bottle it blaming a mere double hip replacement!
All we can say here is Ramm and Doigy battled on when it came to the crunch!
The newcomers…..Can they handle the pressure? We’ll soon find out….. will Phil Jones cut it? Or will we be hearing cries in the bunkers of Jesus Jones!
Crossfield is back….but has he grown a small set of antlers in his time off? Will Burrows hack it or wear the jacket ?
Crank up your Calco banter on the chat room and let’s get it on!
Kind Regards
Steve Calla & Steve Hardwick (the two halves that make up the SAS)

COURSE OVERVIEW

ROYAL – 6059m Par 72

A beautiful course which has rolling fairways set between pine trees and lakes. Fairways are wide enough but there are plenty of bunkers to negotiate. The Royal is not overlong but being straight off the tee is crucial to a good round, water comes into play on 6 of the holes and one of the worlds most famous holes (16th) is a joy to look at but impossible to play! Shots into the greens don’t want to be long or a world of pain awaits so the other key factor is course management. There will be no one who gets anywhere near 40 points on this course so patience is needed.

KEY ATTRIBUTE – ACCURACY

Ocean – 6137m Par 73

A breathtakingly spectacular course with undulating fairways and greens, stunning holes by the sea make this a pleasure to play. Slightly more dog legs than the Royal and slightly longer and most definitely harder. As with the Royal key attributes are straight hitting and very good course management. Once you get on the greens the flat stick needs to be working as 3 putts will be the norm and blobs will litter your card, possibly the best course ever for the Calco Cup and the winner will be the one who makes least mistakes.

KEY ATTRIBUTE – ACCURACY & PUTTING

STORY LAST YEAR

On a lovely but easy Mellia Villaitana course in Benidorm some excellent scoring saw Al Sumner prove what a great player he is in this format when posting a superb record of 78 points (40 & 38) for two rounds. Paul Ephremsen bounced back to his best form to be narrowly beaten by 1 point after a last round 41. Day 1 leaders Pete Burke and Rick Oakes faded back in 3rd and 4th respectively while a career best performance from Phil Cawtheray saw him climb to 5th. With a few holes to go a scrap to avoid the moose between Steve Callaghan, Ady Clough and Allan Doig was just as exciting with Alan Doig brilliantly parring the last to demote Ady Clough to the moose.

1st  – Al Sumner                30/1          (78 pts)
2nd – Paul Ephremsen    30/1         (77 pts)
3rd – Pete Burke               15/1         (75 pts)
4th – Rick Oakes                  5/1         (73 pts)
5th – Phil Cawtheray       50/1         (71 pts)

MICK BALDWIN
Previous 12 years (8/28/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/) ave Handicap 23.5

The gamble of the whole Calco Cup history last year,  50/1 into 5/1 at the off! Came unstuck after an average first day (30), a good final day (40) saw him rise to a creditable 8th place, would be interesting to find out if Mick has worked on his game a bit more since then. If he has he could be well handicapped though I doubt there will be any 50/1 this year!

DAVID BELL
Previous 12 years (26/31/28/21/13/23/22/15/20/-/-/-/) ave handicap 24.7

Twice a moose from nine Calco’s and with no Guy Glovers and Ady Cloughs in the field our resident bookie will do well to avoid filling the dreaded last place. Tough courses suit the better players and his only chance will be to rediscover the straight hitting that got him to 13th in 2010.

Marks Handicap 28….Actual Handicap 28
Bells Bookies 250/1

PETER BURKE
  Previous 12 years (3/10/-/-/-/-/-/-/1/-/1/-) ave handicap 10.2

Returned from winning in 2004 (off 12) and 2006 (9) to record a 10th place in 2013 (11) finishing a close up 3rd (9) last year. Impressive form figures of 1st/1st/10th/3rd in his four Calco appearances. Next years Southern Ryder Cup Challenge Captain has all the skills to be a serious contender on these tough courses, shortlisted for sure unless feeling the wrath of the handicap committee.

Form Handicap 7 …,Actual Handicap 9
Bells Bookies 5/1

GARY BURROWS
 Calco Debut

Off a high handicap but reportedly been practising for his debut. Known as ” Bandit Burrows “, this may tell a story!! late starter in golf and an improver unlike the likes of Lister & Hardwick who are on a downward slide!

Form Handicap 26 ..Actual Handicap 23
Bells Bookies 20/1

STEPHEN CALLAGHAN
 Previous 12 years (30/19/22/24/17/24/12/17/7/15/15/12) age handicap 22.9

One top 10 from previous 12 appearances and four time moose says he will be nearer last than 1st, was looking over his shoulder last year and will not relish these tough courses. Only hope is to work on his putting as these greens are unforgiving, that’s if you can get to them with enough shots in hand to score! Easily discounted for the title but no doubt we will all hear plenty from the ‘Mouth from the South’.

Form Handicap 28….Actual Handicap 28
Bells Bookies 100/1

PHIL CAWTHERAY
 Previous 12 years (5/20/16/-/5/21/11/16/-/-/-/-) ave Handicap 20.5

A mixed bag of results in seven appearances but a very good 5th place last year means Phil’s no mug. A couple more shots his way and he could contend, will he miss his brother Paul (lol!) this year, perhaps not!

Form Handicap 21 ..Actual Handicap 19
Bells Bookies 35/1

GRAHAM COPLEY
 Previous 12 years (27/12/25/20/21/16/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/) Ave Handicap 24.6

An excellent 12th in 2013 when 14 points away from winning. His best of six Calco attempts and just keeps his head above water, well backed for the moose a couple of times, same again here I feel unless getting help from the handicapper. Won’t finish last but highly unlikely to win.

Form Handicap 28….Actual Handicap ……NON RUNNER
Bells Bookies

MARTIN CROSSFIELD
 Previous 12 years (-/-/15/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/) Ave Handicap 21

Just one appearance from Martin in 2012 when a respectable and safe 15th from 28 runners and difficult to gage. Has he improved his game since? has he practised for this? These are questions that most don’t know. Watch for any market moves would be my suggestion.

Form Handicap 24 ….Actual Handicap 24
Bells Bookies 35/1

JIMMY CURLEY
 Previous 12 years (25/4/12/6/3/19/8/14/6/14/10/1/) Ave Handicap 15.5

Ever present player and winner way back in 2003 and 2 recent top 10’s but has been handicapped to the hilt and a poor showing last year (25th) suggests age and injuries are catching up on our popular and quiet Northerner. A help from the handicapper could revive some hopes of a top 10 but difficult to see him lifting the coveted trophy.

Form Handicap 20 … Actual Handicap 18
Bells Bookies 40/1

ALAN DOIG
 Previous 12 years (31/13/18/1/22/7/9/4/8/-/-/-/) Ave Handicap 13.7

The wheels came off last year in a big way and only a miraculous par at the last saved Doigy from the moose. You knew it was going bad in the last round as he even asked me for advice! 5 top tens in 9 appearances and a brilliant off the pace win in difficult conditions at the Belfry in 2011 makes no sense of last year’s debacle. He literally came back from the dead in 2012 (carted off by a doctor after nine holes) to finish a creditable 18th, how do you price this one up?

Form Handicap 17 …Actual Handicap 16
Bells Bookies 60/1

PAUL EPHREMSEN
 Previous 12 years (2/30/19/11/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/) Ave Handicap 13.2

Three indifferent performances were followed by a stunning effort last year losing out by just one shot. A brilliant Ryder Cup earlier in the year will make sure Paul is surely one of the favourites this year, solid putting is essential and that could be his nemesis, my favourite to be the most popular in the auction.

Form Handicap 15 … Actual Handicap 13
Bells Bookies 15/1

ANDY FEARNSIDES
 Previous 12 years (12/6/3/2/23/6/13/-/-/-/-/-/) Ave Handicap 15.2

Threatened to win Calco on more than one occasion, runner up at the Belfry in 2011 in a low scoring event and 3rd the following year a long way behind runaway victor Rick Oakes. Remains consistent and a solid all round game but likely to find a few in front of him again this year.

Form Handicap 17 ..Actual Handicap 14
Bells Bookies 25/1

ROB FLEMMING
 Calco Debut

A decent quality golfer who made a fine debut in this year’s Ryder Cup Challenge. Can’t see him being too big a price and a bold showing expected.

Form Handicap 7 ..Actual Handicap 7
Bells Bookies 15/1

PETER FORSTER
 Previous 12 years (10/3/9/4/7/2/21/2/4/1/2/4/) Ave Handicap 6.4

Mr Calco himself and only ever once outside the top 10. Surprisingly only 1 Calco victory to his name back in 2005. A class act who can never be ruled out and there would be no more popular winner than ‘Fozzy’ best putter on tour and that will be key to his chances.

Form Handicap 8 … Actual Handicap 9
Bells Bookies 25/2

STEVE HARDWICK
 Previous 12 years (29/15/5/19/18/13/23/10/13/10/13/6/) ave Handicap 14.9

I think Steve will admit to himself he has underperformed in far too many Calco’s with a 5th place in 2012 his best effort to date. To be fair his brilliant organisation of the event must take the concentration levels away from the golf as he is no mug when on song. Will be a big price for his supporters which are very thin on the ground these days!

Form Handicap 20 …Actual Handicap 16
Bells Bookies 30/1

PHIL JONES
 Calco debut

Welcome addition to the gang by all accounts, steady off a reasonable handicap (around 16) but not one who plays regularly. Will be in that group ‘could be anything’. Shouldn’t think too many chances will be taken by our bookmaker.

Form Handicap 16 ..Actual Handicap 18
Bells Bookies 40/1

ANDY KAYE
 Previous 12 years (20/5//8/14/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/) ave Handicap 15.7

2 top 10’s from four Calco’s is a sound effort so far and quietly fancied to go well again. Has no problem getting to the greens but like many needs the flat stick to be hot on these tough greens if he is to challenge for the title, but in form I hear?

Form Handicap 18 …Actual Handicap 17
Bells Bookies 30/1

CRAIG LIGHTOWLER
 Previous 12 years (6/23/26/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 17

A remarkable 6th last year when a serious arm injury looked likely to see him struggle. Certainly the best of his three Calco’s and could be a lively e.w outsider if returning in the same form and off a more lenient handicap.

Form Handicap 19 ….Actual Handicap 18
Bells Bookies 30/1

PHIL LISTER
 Previous 12 years (21/16/13/-/16/18/-/-/-/3/6/2) ave Handicap 13.5

After some early promise it seems like these days he saves his best form for the night time! Shame lovely iron player and straight off the tee so might be good value for a top 5 finish on these tough courses. Should find his own sticker ‘must try harder’!

Form Handicap 17 .. Actual Handicap 16
Bells Bookies 40/1

KEITH LOUGHRAN
 Previous 12 years (24/27/-/22/10/20/14/-/-/-/-/-) ave Handicap 24

More moose material than golden goose for the big man. Like his T.V. interviews talks a good game though! I’m sure everyone would like to see him do well and will be popular in the auction and not for winning!

Form Handicap 28 ..Actual Handicap 24
Bells Bookies 80/1

BEN MOYLE
 Previous 12 years (28/1/11/3/8/-/-/9/15/6/3/9) Ave Handicap 13.7

Brilliant and surprise champion in 2013 but struggled last year and Ben will be first to admit his form hasn’t been good this year. Will have to rediscover that magic touch around the greens to contend but tough course could bring the best out of him and discount at your peril.

Form Handicap 16 ..Actual Handicap 16
Bells Bookies 30/1

RICK OAKES
 Previous 12 years (4/14/1/15/1/3/5/6/9/5/7/3) Ave Handicap 12.5

Two time winner and only twice out the top 10 in the last 12 years. Demolition job in 2012 on a tough course and good solid player, certainly one of the favourites again this year and along with Fozzy the best putters on tour.

Form Handicap 13 …Actual Handicap 12
Bells Bookies 10/1

CHRIS RAMM
 Previous 12 years (17/29/7/13/9/5/-/-/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 15.5

Fought injury last couple of years to finish respectably but early promise hasn’t materialised. Has the game but unless the handicapper helps his chances of winning are as slim as Chris having an early night! easily discounted.

Form Handicap 18 ..actual Handicap 18
Bells Bookies 50/1

JEZ STANLEY
 Previous 12 years (13/25/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 19.5

Decent midfield performance last year and possibly one to watch out for if his driver and putter are behaving. Won’t be last but difficult to see him beating the top players.

Form Handicap 21… Actual Handicap 20
Bells Bookies 40/1

AL SUMNER
 Previous 12 years (1/-/-/-/2/-/2/1/10/8-/-) Ave Handicap 13.5

Stunning record in this event and last four appearances see figures of 1/2/2/1 which says it all. How Al went off at 30/1 last year is still a mystery and I doubt whether there will be any double figure odds this year, get the feeling an expected big chop from the handicapper might be enough to see him outside top 3 this year.

Form Handicap 11 … Actual Handicap 12
Bells Bookies 10/1

STEVE TATTERSFIELD
 Previous 12 years (7/9/6/8/11/1/-/-/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 8.5

Big hitting Tatts won on his debut in 2009 and has a good overall Calco record and is sure to be in the top 10 again. Accuracy off the tee is required here and that could be his Achilles heel, solid with the flat stick and likely to be popular in the auction, won’t be long before he wins this again, this year?

Form Handicap 10 .. Actual Handicap 11
Bells Bookies 15/1

KEVIN ULLA
 Previous 12 years (11/8/2/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 11

Second behind runaway winner Rick Oakes in 2012 on debut and expected to win this sometime. This year the tough courses are right up his alley and there aren’t too many as accurate as Kev and bold showing expected. Loves the crack and comes alive at about 3 am after a few beers!

Form Handicap 13 ..Actual Handicap 12
Bells Bookies 15/1

MARK WALLIS (North)
 Previous 12 years (19/18/21/23/20/22/24/19/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 20

Former moose his game has improved over the last two years to find midfield security, might struggle on these tight courses and will be looking over his shoulders during the two days competition.

Form Handicap 26 ..Actual Handicap 20
Bells Bookies 80/1

MARK WALLIS (South)
 Previous 12 years (15/2/20/18/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 15

Very good runner up in 2013 but average overall in four Calco’s, certainly a better greyhound trainer than golfer! and needs help from the handicap committee to hold any chance. Another where tight and tough courses won’t suit as temperament and course management are suspect!

Form Handicap 19 .. Actual Handicap 17
Bells Bookies 40/1

GAVIN WHITWORTH
 Previous 12 years (9/11/10/16/6/11/1/20/17-/-/-) Ave Handicap 17

Famously went from moose to golden goose a few years back and better than average in Calco’s since. No one tries harder and has the game to do well, would be a popular winner after his brilliant Ryder Cup captaincy this year, good e.w prospects.

Form Handicap 18 ..Actual Handicap 16
Bells Bookies 30/1

SIMON WOOLRIDGE
 Calco debut

Replaces the unfortunate and injured Graham Copley and certainly adds some class to the Calco, he is a bit of a hybrid (Southerner living up North), one of our lower handicappers he will soon be dragged down by the likes of Calla and if he gets drawn with Kev (Ulla) remind him to bring some ear muffs!

Form Handicap 8 … Actual Handicap 7
Bells Bookies 25/2

JEFF WIND
 Previous 12 years (18/26/-/12/12/4/17/-/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 16.5

Only one top 10 from six appearances but wouldn’t take too much encouragement to move up the leader board, another who won’t be last and could go well at fancy odds if starting well.

Form Handicap 20 ..Actual Handicap 17
Bells Bookies 80/1

ANDY YATES
 Previous 12 years (16/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-) Ave Handicap 14

Despite consuming vast amounts of alcohol last year he made a respectable Calco debut in 16th and will be looking to improve on that in this years renewal, sound all round game and certainly not dismissed, one for the value seekers.

Form Handicap 18 .. Actual Handicap 17

FORM BETTING

( not likely to represent Bells Bookies odds)

6/1 Rick Oakes, 7/1 Peter Burke, 8/1 Al Sumner, 12/1 Peter Forster, Paul Ephremsen, 16/1 Steve Tattersfield, Mick Baldwin, 20/1 Rob Flemming, Kevin Ulla, 25/1 Andy Kaye, Andy Fearnsides, Simon Woolridge, 33/1 Andy Yates, Martin Crossfield, Gavin Whitworth, Gary Burrows, 40/1 Mark Wallis (s), Phil Cawtheray, Phil Jones, Chris Ramm, 50/1 Jimmy Curley, Jeff Wind, Phil Lister, Craig Lightowler, Ben Moyle, 66/1 Alan Doig, Steve Hardwick, Jez Stanley 80/1 Keith Loughran 100/1 Mark Wallis (n) 500/1 Stephen Callaghan, David Bell

FORM GUIDE SUMMARY :-

The 2015 Calco Cup is set for another superb two days of action where the first day is all about position both on the Royal course and in terms of ‘moose’ or ‘golden goose’ this is a tight course with some stunning holes but only those that are both accurate off the tee and with their second shots will do well, day 2 is about bottle but a sound driver and putter will be key, overall the player who makes least mistakes will be holding the trophy aloft while the player that makes most mistakes will be wearing the Antlers!, AL SUMNER is the form man and looks a solid e.w bet to make the top 3 while PETER BURKE will be well suited to the venue and is the form selection, MICK BALDWIN was backed like defeat was out the question and though there will be no 50/1 available any double figure odds are worth taking, for a long shot CRAIG LIGHTOWLER might surprise.

1st – Peter Burke
2nd – Al Sumner
3rd – Mick Baldwin
4th – Craig Lightowler
