The Write Up

The fun and games of the 2015 Calco Cup began with incidents in both the north and south camps. Firstly Wallis South could not be roused from his slumber resulting in him, Bell and Ulla missing their flight.

Following a train dash across London they actually arrived not long after the advance party at the familiar Vile Gale Hotel, Albufeira, due to Jet2 shenanigans involving a plane that was too small and a naughty boy singalong which went down well with passengers but less so with hostesses.

Another first for a foreign Calco was the sight of rain and mist greeting players in Portugal. Fortunately it would clear up for the rest of the visit.

The Auction kicked off proceedings which saw a break from tradition with Callaghan inviting some new auctioneers to sell some of the field. As usual over €4000 was staked.

Opening night piled on the excitement with Calco Cup syndicate dog Calco Flyer running in the final of the East Anglian Derby. A cracking run saw the Flyer finish a more than respectable 3rd.

Calco Day One

Not surprisingly given the hectic and long nature of the Wednesday, Day One saw some sorry sights boarding the bus to Vale de Lobo. Jones and Fleming were late on parade whilst rookie Woolridge boarded with a sick bag which he proceeded to fill.

The Royal Course offered the tournaments opening challenge with 2014 runner up Ephremsen leading off the field.  Another to suffer a delayed reaction to the opening night festivities was Ramm who was caught short on the opening nine and had to make a mad buggy dash to the half way house toilet facilities. When asked later by Phil Cawtheray, “What hole was that?” The reply came, “Both. At the same time…”!!!

The world famous cliff top 16th hole would provide superb photo opportunities.

Amazingly, Woolridge, despite being sick on the bus, would shoot one of the rounds of the day, a magnificent 5 over par for 38 points. However he would still find himself 4 behind the leader as 5/1 fav Burke returned an incredible 3 over, despite a 7, for 42 pts. Those witnessing it described it as like playing with a pro! Oakes (37) and Whitworth (36) would complete the Golden Goose group. A gap of four points then saw Hardwick at the right end of proceedings for once and joined in the chasing group by Stanley, Crossfield and Yates.  Your correspondent had predicted there would be shocks at either end but in fact they were all at the Moose end. 2014 Champion Sumner would struggle to 23 points whilst the heavily backed Lister and Fearnsides would return only 24 a piece. Perhaps most shocking of all was the 20 points accumulated by the previously consistent Ulla.

Neither Callaghan or lumped on Moose favourite Bell would feature in the Moose group after steady rounds.  Unfortunately the competition suffered its first ever mid-round withdrawal when new boy Jones was forced to withdraw with a pectoral injury on the 16th.  Quite where this left the Moose standings was the matter of some controversy which rumbled on until the following morning when it was decided to void him from the competition.  This left another player suffering from injury in the biggest danger of Moosing. Wallis (South) had seen a bout of sciatica flare up whilst tending to our beloved Calco Flyer and the injury would be significant in him returning only 17 points. He would be joined in the Moose group by Wallis (North), Ulla and Ramm.

Day one’s bus home provided the usual comedy gold with Forster’s no teeth game reducing Loughran among others to tears.

Calco Cup Day 2

Friday saw competitors tackle the magnificent Ocean course. Against his masseurs advice Wallis decided to compete, a particularly brave decision given he was walking almost bent double. He wasn’t the only one far from 100% with Yates and Sumner missing the bus whilst Ulla appeared at breakfast bouncing off waiters and the furniture. Indeed with 3 holes played Wallis (S) had closed the gap, with Ulla and Wallis (N) failing to trouble the scorecard. However both would pull themselves together and ease away from trouble. It would be 2014’s 5th Lightowler who would slip into danger. He’d made the schoolboy error of having lessons shortly before the contest which he compounded by trying to hit his way out of trouble with the big dog. Had his round been a cricket innings he’d have scored 120 not out composed mainly of sixes over extra cover and pulls for four through mid on!!

Howeverthe extent of Wallis (S) ‘s injury was too great despite the bravest of efforts and unfortunately the moose regalia would be his with Lightowler the Moosette. Moyle dropped in to the bottom 3 with another woeful display. Since winning in 2013 he appears to have purchased a one way ticket to mooseville. Bizarre excuses included the wrong type of grass and the course not suiting his game (“What is his game? Squash?!”- Fearnsides)

Back down the course, indeed several miles back down the course, was the slowest fourball in Calco history- the Goosette group of Hardwick, Stanley, crossfield and Yates lost about 4 holes on the group ahead and left the gallery wondering if a search party should be sent out! With Whitworth struggling and dropping down the field Hardwick and Stanley would join battle for an all important place on the top four podium. Hardwick, having holed from a bunker on 17, chipped for glory when they eventually appeared on the 18th but it slid just past allowing Stanley to grab fourth on count back. In the Golden Goose group excitement mounted as, following a late night, Burke started slowly and having only accumulated 12 points on the front 9 the leading 3 had bunched up and it was anyone’s trophy. But a run of pars and birdies around the turn saw Burke pull clear of Oakes in second and Woolridge in third and a birdie on the last in front of the gallery was a fitting end to a day which saw him become the first player in Calco Cup history to win the trophy 3 times.

Another memorable Calco Cup concluded with the presentation ceremony at the City Bar with Pete Burke crowned deservedly as your 2015 Calco Cup Champion.

CALCO CUP 2015 FORM GUIDE -THE AFTERMATH & WHERE DID WE GO WRONG!!!

Click For More

1st – PETER BURKE – 74 pts

Form guide selection was spot on and thoroughly deserving and popular winner. Stunning and virtually faultless opening round set the tone but had to dig deep when challenged strongly half way through the final day. A strong finish saw a comfortable victory in the end by 5 shots. Set for a massive slash in 2016 after his 3rd Calco win in 6 starts but he won’t care as he builds up to the 2017 Ryder Cup Challenge captaincy!

2nd – RICK OAKES – 69 pts

Solid as ever and came there with a rattle to challenge during the final round before fading near finish. Has form figures to die for but then again doesn’t have to contend with karaoke bars etc until 5 in the morning so will always do well. Like myself in 2013 set for a handicap slash when runner up which might make it harder for Rick to challenge!

3rd – SIMON WOOLRIDGE – 67 pts

Brilliant Calco debut, who would have predicted this on the coach going to the first day as he filled a sick bag up after a Calco night out on the Wednesday. Superb 38 pts on opening day but after a strong challenge early on the second day did nerves get to him! A handicap trim for next year may not stop him contending again and one for the shortlist for outright honours in 2016.

4th – JEZ STANLEY – 64 pts

Superb effort from Jez and a top four finish richly deserved after two solid rounds. Won’t be chopped for this being 10 points off the winner and after being 25th in 2013, 13th in 2014 and now 4th is one of the very few moving in the right direction and a serious contender for 2016.

5th – STEVE HARDWICK – 64 pts

At last Mr Calco himself brought his current form with him to Portugal and just lost out on an e.w place on a back 6 count back, saving our resident bookie a few shillings!! Great effort and only needs those better players in front to be handicapped accordingly and he may yet lift the trophy next year, nobody would begrudge Steve that, the question would still be, can he perform coming down that back nine in front?

6th – PETER FORSTER – 60 pts

A gap appears between the top 5 and the rest but still a decent effort as expected from our Calco legend Fozzy. Just didn’t quite happen on first day to be able to challenge but good effort nonetheless. will surely win again one year!

7th – MICK BALDWIN – 59 pts

Another good effort and again finished strong unlike his escalator challenge which is set to be a You Tube phenomenon! It would come as no surprise to see Mick lift the trophy very soon and that will make many people smile, he has embraced the Calco in a big way in his 3rd year with loads of banter, fun and plenty of drinking!

8th – ANDREW YATES – 59 pts

As expected from the form guide prediction an improvement on last years 16th and moving up the leaderboard nicely with a top 10 here. Two good rounds which is truly amazing given the fact of how much alcohol he consumed over the few days! A couple of shots back next year and will be in the mix for sure.

9th – GAVIN WHITWORTH – 59 pts

A brilliant 36 pts on the first day which saw him in the Golden Goose group was his highlight but a poor and slightly unlucky final round saw him slip to ninth. Plenty of positives to take home from a former winner and will no doubt be a contender next year. As always gives 100% on and off the course!

10th – ANDREW KAYE – 56th

Another gap appears to this position but an excellent finish on the final day from Andy to lift him to 10th spot. A poor first day (no surprise there after first night drinking binge!) gave him no chance but surely a player who given a decent Calco handicap will be able to contend in the future.

11th – ANDY FEARNSIDES – 55 pts

Promised so much and again heavily backed pre Calco but a shocking first day with 24 points was followed by a strong final round. Another who knows they are capable of winning this and has the game to as well. That would be a popular victory for a Calco regular.

12th – PAUL EPHREMSEN – 54 pts

Started reasonably well but struggled on final day but like me loves the event and trip. Has the game to win a Calco with a bit more consistency and hits the ball a country mile, another on the shortlist for 2016.

13th – GARRY BURROWS – 52 pts

Nice Calco debut finishing in the top half and you could see how much he enjoyed the trip on and certainly off the course. A Calco regular looks guaranteed and showed glimpses of a decent game so improvement expected for 2016.

14th – ALAN DOIG – 52 pts

Creditable effort from Doigy after last years woes and top half finish back where he should be. Extraordinary really given the amount of time he spent in the bars and how much sleep he doesn’t get!

15th – MARTIN CROSSFIELD – 52 pts

Solid first day with 30 points was followed by a poor final day, but overall mid table security, much like Leeds United again this season. Again loves the trip and is always keen to improve.

16th – ROB FLEMMING – 52 pts

The big fella will be disappointed with his effort here on Calco debut and he in his own admission didn’t play well. Pleased to have him on board as Rob is one of our great characters and a future Calco winner without a doubt.

17th – JEFF WIND – 51 pts

As said in preview not one that will moose and needs some shots if he is to contend. Tidy enough and we expect a barrage of jokes to be assembled for the coach next year!

18th – AL SUMNER – 50 pts

Last years Calco winner down in 18th place, who would have thought that! Tame defence and just never got going, he will be back!

19th – STEVE TATTERSFIELD – 50 PTS

We are now coming down to the real ‘Plumbs’ on the Calco. Poor from Tatts who is much better than this, if he played as well as he drank he would be a winner all day long! bounce back next year.

20th – KEITH LOUGHRAN – 47 pts

Played OK on first day and just did enough to keep away from the bottom few, but the big fella is a mile away from being a Ferrari!

21st – PHIL CAWTHERAY – 46 pts

Without doubt the worst handicapped player on tour so excuses for a low finish. Decent final day on tough course and never looked in real trouble, might take some revenge next year.

22nd – PHIL LISTER – 46pts

Another dismal showing in the Calco from the 2015 winning Ryder Cup Challenge captain Put those stickers on your bag ‘Im supposed to be a good golfer’!

23rd – CHRIS RAMM – 45pts

Such a nice swing and game, Ill discipline and partying from the off his downfall again but why not, it’s not all about the golf. Still amazed everyone by being in the moose group on the final day but class got him through in the end!

24th – KEVIN ULLA – 44 pts

Oh dear oh dear! A shocker from our cockney hero! needs a course with no bunkers that’s for sure! what a sight on the last day and a miracle he even made it as most of his good shots were the millions he drunk the night before!

25th – STEVE CALLAGHAN – 43 pts

Enjoyed a great first 14 holes and not really in trouble. Still never to moose abroad but no inspiration to get involved in top half in the future! Great fun all the same and the Calco Cup wouldn’t be the same without him.

26th – MARK WALLIS (North) – 40 pts

Looked in real trouble after first day showing but a stunning few holes on the front nine of final day dug him out of a hole. Handicap needs to be lowered or will be in trouble next year.

27th – DAVE BELL – 39 pts

Our bookie enjoyed not being moose both on and off the course. To be fair never really in trouble and could easily have finished higher if putting a bit better.

28th – BEN MOYLE – 39 pts

Wow! A disaster for our 2013 hero, game has gone but another who needs to realise you can’t get obliterated the night before the Calco starts!! Should no better! Will undoubtedly bounce back next year!

29th – CRAIG LIGHTOWLER – 37 pts

Hit the ball a country mile but sadly all in the wrong direction. Absolute legend and the only trophy he did win was the punch ball champ in the City Bar, he knows so so lucky not to Moose!

30th – MARK WALLIS (SOUTH) – 32 pts

No comment really, injured back and a complete lack of course management to allow for this was the downfall. Bu–er this hurts and a prediction that the Calco Cup will come my way next year! Well you can always dream!

W/D – PHIL JONES – scored well until injury at 16th on first day forced a retirement

W/D – JIMMY CURLEY – didn’t start but due to severe injury but great to see him on tour, be back next year.

FINAL SUMMARY :-

A much deserved and 3rd win in the Calco Cup for PETE BURKE. Played brilliant on the first day and held his nerve when challenged on the final day to come home 5 points clear of Rick Oakes who again played to his strengths (mainly not being out until 5am in the morning like the rest of us!). A great debut from Simon Woolridge who was an excellent Calco rookie and his highlight of filling a sick bag up after an untold amount of alcohol on Calco eve was a joy to see, a future winner for sure.

Credit to the likeable Jez Stanley for a top 4 finish and how could we not mention the ‘choker’ himself Steve Hardwick, all the usual hype etc actually came true and an excellent 5th was achieved just missing out on some inspired e.w gambles for top 4.

There was so many disasters this Calco, Steve Tattersfield, Kevin Ulla and Ben Moyle are worryingly on a downward slide that needs serious addressing. Brilliant that Calla and Ding Dong never looked like moosing  as expected but how the mighty have fallen. Myself wearing the antlers etc was not in the script but hey hoe roll on 2016, this was again a vintage Calco with so many memories and I’m sure on behalf of everyone we thank Steve, Calla, Fozzy and all the team that makes these trips the most looked forward to of the year!

2nd – RICK OAKES – 10/1

3rd – SIMON WOOLRIDGE – 10/1
