The Write Up

The 16th Calco Cup embraced a new venue with the Calco entourage descending on Villamoura.

As usual the combatants descended on Faro airport from all corners of the UK with 36 players harbouring high hopes of lifting the coveted trophy or at least avoiding the ignominy of the dreaded Moose.

In a break with tradition the auction was held during dinner on the first evening, which also included viewing of veteran syndicate greyhound Calco Flyer scorching to yet another victory.

36 players took to the tees on Day One at the magnificent Victoria Course although a pre-existing injury meant Ramm would be unable to complete 36 holes and did not come under starters orders. Another withdrawal with a similar problem was the much missed Graham Copley.

The dubious honour of being Player One, Group One went to southern rookie Jim Holliday. Last spotted in the early hours, pre-battle, in a state which could only be described as ‘off his tits’, Holliday would go on to score a remarkable 38 points, the high score of the day, and thus become the first person in Calco history to tee off first on day one and last on day two (your correspondent hasn’t actually checked this statement for thruthfulness but its probably right).

The tough course meant that plus 30 scores were at a premium but there were sterling efforts from Baldwin (33), Kaye (32), Woolridge (33), Burrows (31), Tattersfield (36), Fearnsides (31), Ulla (32), rookie Rich (31) and Whitworth (31).

At the wrong end perennial Moose favourite Bell’s odds had shortened considerably as a result of a serious mountaineering accident disrupting his normal high intensity preparation schedule (visiting the range every day for a week before the Calco…). Regrettably his day one score of 13 put him 8 points behind the next lowest Crossfield on 21.

The pair would be joined in the day two Moose group by Ephremsen whilst the Moosette group would be comprised of Wallis (N), 2015 strugglers Moyle and Lightowler and surprisingly, Lister.

At the head of affairs Holliday would enter the fray 2 points clear of Tattersfield with Woolridge and Baldwin a further 5 back.

The tree lined Old Course would provide the setting for the drama to be played out along with other notable incidents. Not least among these was what will become known as the ‘Toiletgate’ incident. Your correspondent’s four ball met Loughran and Wind coming up the adjacent fairway. With Loughran displaying a face like thunder we were informed by Wind that, “there’s been an incident…” It appeared that Callaghan had chosen to make use of the facilities close to the previous green but having concluded his business burst out of said facility, evidently in fine fettle, leaving the door to slam behind him, just as Loughran was mid stroke on a vital putt, which was of course missed.

To add to his potential to struggle Bell, along with Moyle, had decided to hire clubs rather than bringing their own. As an advert for this course of action it would turn out not to be ideal. Despite rallying to within 6 points of those ahead at one stage, Bell would ultimately end 12 points adrift with Moyle filling the Moosette slot after a third successive year of abject performance.

Ephremsen would finish 33rd whilst Lister (32nd ) and Hardwick, no stranger to this parish, (30th), would prove, if proof were ever needed, that they’re #strongertogether after lifting the Calco Pairs in April. I’m not sure they’ve mentioned it much since….

Down the course Tattersfield had made his grab for glory and at the turn had overtaken Holliday and seemed certain to record a second Calco Cup triumph. However the back nine on day two of the Calco is a place where chickens can never be counted. Tattersfield would come back to the pack whilst Burrows and Whitworth would come to the fore with magnificent rounds of 39 along with another previous winner Doig, who recorded the high score of the day with a superb 40 (there’s not been many of those in Calco history if anyone would care to research?). Ultimately 3 players would finish on a total of 70 with Burrows snatching second place on back 9 countback and Whitworth third on back 3 (!) countback from Doig. Tattersfield would slip to 5th and disappoint his legion of backers (your correspondent among them).

One man would keep his nerve though. Jimmy Holliday would produce a superb back 9 (20) to take the honours on debut with a total of 72. Anyone seeing him on Wednesday evening would have offered ‘any odds you like’ on this outcome but it was richly deserved and notice of a talented player who can light up the Ryder Cup, the Pairs and The Calco itself for years to come.

All together now…

“WE’RE ALL GOING ON A JIMMY HOLLIDAY..”

CALCO CUP 2016 FORM GUIDE -THE AFTERMATH & WHERE DID WE GO WRONG!!!

Click For More

1ST – JIM HOLLIDAY – 72 pts

In one of the most amazing and best Calco Cups since this great event started back in 2001 we were treated to one of the most memorable winners of all time in Jim Holliday. Starting at 40/1 with two moderate Ryder Cup Challenges under his belt our incredibly popular southern Calco rookie played the best 2 rounds of his golfing life to come out on top of 35 starters. Was it straight forward, of course not! The first man on the tee box you could see the nerves and a violent snap hook resulted In a lost ball and a blob. Halfway up the fairway on the second hole he was caught bent double vomiting profusely, no doubt the shenanigans at the 19th hole the previous night having a lot to do with that! If our resident bookie had seen this he surely would have drifted to 100/1 + in the running. What came after was unreal and majestic as he shot a brilliant round to come back with 38 points on a tough Victoria course. A good lead but one most expected to be relinquished on the final day. After consuming a large number of post race pints Jim did himself an enormous favour by not making it out at night time and though still looking like crap the next morning Jim was probably fresher than most.  As expected by the 9th hole on the beautiful Old Course his 2 shot lead had turned into a 2 shot deficit. What followed in the words of one of his playing partners was awesome and 20 points on the final stretch took him to a superb 34 points and a total of 72 to take the title by 2 shots. His celebrations and speech at the closing presentation will live long in the memory. Worthy and most popular winner.

2nd – GARY BURROWS – 70 pts

A superb final round scoring 39 points (20 back 9) saw Gary climb the leaderboard up to the lofty heights of 2016 Calco Cup runner up confirming the promise of his rookie 2015 13th place finish, a good season all round and surely a contender in 2017

3rd – GAV WHITWORTH – 70 pts

Excellent effort and great final day scoring of 39 points, Gav’s best Calco since he won a few years ago and he knows he let a couple of chances slip at Victoria that could of made a huge difference, happy to see one of the Souths Ryder Cup players in such good form!

4th – ALAN DOIG – 70 pts

Stunning effort on the Old Course from Doigy scoring a best of the day 40 points to come from well off the pace to get into the frame, a man who is climbing back in the right direction after plummeting to the depths of despair a couple of years back and could well win a second Calco Cup in 2017

5th – STEVE TATTERSFIELD – 70 pts

Also in the 4 way tie for second place but finishing 5th on back 9 count back is our big hitting Northern friend. After a fantastic first day (36 pts) where he played out of his skin Tatts was sitting in a great position 2 pts behind Jim. He was clear favourite with Bells Bookies to come home triumphant as the last group set off on the Old Course and as they teed off at the 10th he would have been a long odds on shot as he turned a 2 shot deficit into a 4 shot lead but an inspired Mr Holliday and an average back 9 saw him clutch defeat from the hands of victory. Still a great effort and certainly was a massive winner in the fancy dress stakes, the Norths 2017 Ryder Cup Challenge Captain is a joy to be around and is another where the Calco Cup wouldn’t be the same without him.

6th – KEVIN ULLA – 68 pts

A big ante post gamble on our Cockney hero only just came unstuck as he missed out on a place by 2 pts, saving our resident bookie a right few quid, especially as he laid him until the cows came home without much movement on his price. After a poor 2 years Kev will be pleased with his two solid rounds and a 3rd Southerner in the top 6 kept the Souths Ryder Cup Captain Pete Burke very happy.

7th – ANDY FEARNSIDES – 67 pts

A good effort from Fearny and a 6th top 10 from 9 Calco’s shows how consistent he is. Always finishes strong and only a better first day is stopping him lifting the coveted trophy which would be well deserved.

8th – ANDY KAYE – 66 pts

A very good Calco for Andy and a solid first day of 32 (form guide tip to win his 4 ball) was followed by a decent 34 to finish in the top 10 without threatening the leaders. Can build on this to contend in 2017.

9th – PETER FORSTER – 64 pts

Another decent Calco for Fozzie and predictably again in the top 10. Certainly deserves a shot or two back for our veteran performer and would be without doubt a most popular winner.

10th – PETE BURKE – 62 pts

A first day 28 put paid to the defending champions chances but still a solid effort to climb into top 10 with a final round of 34 for our 2017 Ryder Cup Challenge Captain. Understandably maybe he had his mind on his mission to relieve the Northerners of that title next May.

11th – MICKY BALDWIN – 62 pts

Fast becoming a legend of the Calco and another good effort but as said in preview a harsh 3 shot slash cost him being a contender, great fun on and off the course.

12th – JOHN CLEMENTS – 62 pts

Great Calco for rookie ‘Elvis’ and moved into top half with a good last round of 33 pts much to my surprise as a scrap for moose honours was predicted.

13th – SIMON WOOLRIDGE – 61 pts

Most would be happy with a score of 61 pts over two days on these tough courses but my ante post selection and the tournament favourite was disappointing on the course. Now off the course he would have been top 3 in the drinking stakes! Don’t write him off next year!

14th – DAMIEN THORNGATE – 60 pts

Another popular character who fits in great with the Calco boys. Two OK, but not spectacular rounds, would have been by his own admission, not what was expected and he can do better and most likely will in 2017.

15th – ANDREW YATES – 60 pts

Amazing how Yella can actually swing a club given how much alcohol he consumes and his dancing in the 19th hole bar certainly out shone his golf and though a reasonable finish he can do better.

16th – STEPHEN CALLAGHAN – 59 pts

Yes this is not a mistake, Calla yes Calla was 16th on some very tough courses so hats off to our entertainer and compare. A truly magnificent effort and boy! did we know about it, superb and well deserved!

17th – ROB FLEMING – 58 pts

Mid table security wasn’t what the big man was looking for and a poor first day was the reason. Will definitely come good one day as he’s far too good a player to not contend. Another who embraces the Calco spirit on and off the course.

18th – ADAM DAVISON – 58 pts

Good Calco for Adam and was a pleasure to play with on last day as he shot a respectable 35 points to move into top 20. Certainly a player who can improve in 2017 and a possible dark horse for outright honours.

19th – KEIGH LOUGHRAN – 57 pts

A decent comp for one of our stalwarts of the Calco Cup. Would have been even better if it wasn’t for ‘Toiletgate’. I’m sure this will be one of the funniest stories of any trip when we look back in years to come though it might be about 10 years before Keith sees it that way!

20th – JEFF WIND – 57 pts

Steady away for Jeff and more of a light breeze than a wind! Our winner Jim payed a big compliment to Jeff as he guided him around to a magnificent 38 pts after a shaky start, a proper gentleman.

21st – JIMMY CURLEY – 57 pts

Injuries over the last year meant this would always be a struggle for our veteran performer, so probably not disgraced in this year’s event. No doubt will bounce back next year.

22nd – AL SUMNER – 55 pts

Mostly disappointing for our 2014 winner and looking at it he struggles a bit on these tougher courses. Still a class act on and off the course.

23rd – MARK WALLIS (South) – 55 pts

Played poorly on first day blobbing last 4 holes where head had gone! Never really in trouble of mooseing for a second year but a long way short of ever lifting a Calco Cup.

24th – PAUL RICH – 55 pts

Average debut for our popular southern party animal, capable of much better, along with Yella certainly came out on top in the drinking stakes off the course.

25th – MARTIN CROSSFIELD – 55 pts

Shocking first day (21 pts) that almost put him under extreme pressure but showed his class on last day with a fine 34 pts from the moose group.

26th – JEZ STANLEY – 55 pts

Never threatened to win or moose and like many the first day score of 25 was nowhere near good enough. Reasonable last day but again someone who should do better.

27th – ANDREW HOLDER – 54 pts

Incredible collapse on last day when going off in penultimate group after an excellent 32 pts on first day. The toys came out of the pram and temperament definitely suspect which is a shame as he has a nice game.

28th – CRAIG WHELAN –  53 pts

Could have been better with a bit more luck for his Calco debut, nice swing and a bit more practice and he should climb much higher in 2017.

29th – CRAIG LIGHTOWLER – 53 pts

Obviously better than last year but really struggled on first day. Great fun on and off the course and certainly capable of being at the other end of the table.

30th – STEVE HARDWICK – 52 pts

Now we come to the bottom end strugglers and what a shocker half of the Calco Pairs champ had here! Sitting well after the first day with 30 pts he didn’t just choke he was positively strangled on the easier Old Course.

31st – MARK WALLIS (North) – 51 pts

Perennial struggler and our Brummie boy needs more help from the handicapper if he is to climb the leader board. More likely to be under moose pressure but still one of the top lads on the trip.

32nd – PHIL LISTER – 51 pts

Dear oh dear, what a shocker! and like his buddy Mr Hardwick had a complete disaster in this year’s event. It looks like they need each other to show they can actually play a bit, what a pair of gay boys lol!

33rd – PAUL EPHREMSEN – 49 pts

How on earth can anybody with a swing like Pauls be down this end, one of the long hitters as well! It all went pear shaped and for those that noted the reviews predicted bottom four place a big pay day. So lucky Mr Bell never really threatened to put the bottom end under a bit more pressure, that would have been fun! will bounce back in 2017.

34th – BEN MOYLE – 46 pts

Well well well, as predicted at 40/1 the Moosette fell to our 2013 winner Mr Moyle. Poor display after driving reasonably well and game has completely gone, thankfully this effort should kick start a massive rethink with the Ryder Cup Challenge on the horizon.

35th – DAVID BELL – 34 pts

It’s been a while since our resident bookie has worn the antlers but recent injuries stopped any serious preparation and after a poor start the writing was on the wall. Did get within half a dozen points of Ben & Paul on last day but unable to sustain that effort and finished way off the pace. Still another one where the Calco wouldn’t be the same without him and takes all the stick in the best possible spirit.

FINAL SUMMARY :-

The numbers increased to 35 players but again the trip moved up another notch as we stayed in the popular Vilamoura resort. Several Calco debutants added to what was one of the best Calco Cups ever, both on and off the course. At the start it looked a fairly open competition though our bookie David Bell saw a huge gamble on southern star Kevin Ulla. Ultimately he was saved by the skin of his teeth as Kev finished just outside the places in 6th, the first day at the delightful but tough Victoria course saw plenty of disasters not least Bell, Moyle, Ephremsen & Crossfield who made up the moose group on day 2. Some brilliant play at the other end by the likes of Baldwin, Woolridge, Tattersfield and our surprise leader by 2 shots Jimmy Holliday with a brilliant 38 pts set up a stunning day 2.

The betting going into day 2 was furious as we took to the splendid Old Course and if we were honest most would have predicted a massive slip from Jimmy. At halfway this looked distinctly on the cards as Steve Tattersfield majestically took the lead and with both Simon Woolridge and Micky Baldwin slipping back it looked like Tatts main challenge was coming from huge surges from Alan Doig, Gav Whitworth and a flying Gary Burrows. Then unexpectedly and most incredibly Jimmy Holliday tore the back nine up and a 20 point haul saw him not only catch Steve Tattersfield but pass him on to a magnificent and memorable victory on debut by 2 points!

Garry Burrows was a creditable 2nd beating Gavin Whitworth, Alan Doig and  Steve Tattersfield on count back, while at the other end David Bell despite a surge on the front nine on day 2 couldn’t overcome injuries and a general lack of match practice and took the moose honours. As much as the Southern Ryder Cup Challenge captain Pete Burke would be delighted with Holliday, Whitworth & Ulla’s top 6 positions he will have been disturbed by the bottom three placings of Bell, Moyle & Ephremsen particularly Ben Moyle who has rapidly deteriorated.

Someone who deserves a huge mention is Stephen Callaghan who’s 16th place was a performance only just short of Jimmy’s victory. Andrew Kaye and John Clements had great Calco’s as well and apart from the afore mentioned bottom three the Calco Pairs champions Hardwick & Lister were shocking! languishing in the bottom six. As usual there were many stories of golfing incidents in the two days but nothing overshadowed ‘Toiletgate’ involving Calla & Lofty, only they can tell this story!

The closing ceremony as usual was brilliantly done by Calla, Steve and Fozzie (and a bit by Lister) and anyone who witnessed the victory acceptance and speech from Mr Holliday will have that memory for many years to come. Steve Tattersfield may not have won the Calco Cup but without doubt the fancy dress night belonged to him, unbelievable! All in all it was awesome and I couldn’t think of a better bunch of guys I would want to spend a few days with, thank you.
